Behind the scenes of the fashion designer Rachelle Davida

With pleasure I had the chance to take a look in the studio of the fashion designer Rachelle Davida in Rotterdam.

Who is Rachelle Davida?
Rachelle Manuputty is 21 years old and of Moluccan descent. She’s originally from the Hague, but she has been living in Rotterdam for a year and a half now. The name Davida comes from David, her father. From an early age, Rachelle was already creatively active with making clothes. She grew up with this, thanks to her aunts and grandmother. By this the love for designing and making bridesmaid dresses arised.

She has studied 4 years fashion specialist at the ROC Mondriaan in the Hague, because in the end she wanted to make a job from her passion. During the 4 years study, she has gained experience as a trainee with several designers such as: Charlotte Kan, Roya Hesam in Rotterdam and Alexandra Frida in Amsterdam. During her last internship, she made the collection Zip It. Because of her effort in school and her collection Zip It, she was out of the 16.000 students in 2015 chosen to the brilliant person of ROC Mondriaan. She could represent ROC Mondriaan during the national brilliant people elections. She reached the final by receiving the wildcard from the jury. She should be very proud of this! But this was just the beginning, because after her study she started her own business and her company Rachelle Davida was born.

“If the result is beautiful, you’re proud of yourself! Then you can say that you haven’t only designed, but also really created it. Nobody can take this away from you. It gives me a wonderful feeling … almost just special”. – Rachelle Davida

Exclusive custom clothing
Rachelle makes custom clothing that are exclusively affordable and qualitatively. She purchases the fabrics at Schroder stiffen, a fabric fair, at the market in Rotterdam and in Indonesia. She buys her fabrics in Indonesia by herself, such as batik or she let family members send it to her. Every 2 years Rachelle goes to Indonesia to buy a lot of fabrics. Purchasing the kind of fabrics is depended on what kind of order it is. Her preference is to work with suppliers in the future.

With Rachelle it’s possible to come with something designed by yourself. How awesome is this by the way? Or you can let them draw a design. The customer will decide the material based on help and advice from Rachelle. Rachelle also has her own collection that can be customized, but to do this Rachelle will first start with an interview. During the interview, the wishes and needs of the customer will come up with the result that measuring body sizes and posture. After the information that she needs, she’ll start with creating a mood board for inspiration. On this you see a drawing of the design with matching fabrics.

“I get my inspiration out of the things that I see in daily life, but especially the people around me” – Rachelle Davida

The pattern drawings will be cut out of the fabrics and then stitched together. If the sample is finished, the customer will be called and asked to drop by to fit the clothes. During fitting once or twice, depending on the garment, the last adjustments will be taken to create the perfect fitting.

She has real talent! I love her designs, it’s creative, unique, qualitative, edgy, modern and refreshing. Besides that you can make it your own design. So I fell in love with the skirt she made which she sold at a Kwaku festival in the Nelson Mandela Park in Amsterdam.

Also these trainees are creative
There were two trainees during my visit who were there in the last week of their internship. With a great admiration I’ve watched them working with pleasure. Tanusha has designed her own coat as you can see on the photo. This is so cool! First I thought that she just bought that in store. Sven is also very talented and very good with creating formal dress styles. Check out his Instagram Creative Concept, cause seriously, the way how he does it is really high fashion! Even though the two trainees will leave, from the 7th of November, Rachelle can welcome three new trainees and accompany them.

In the next fashion post, I’m wearing two outfits from her collection! Also I can do a giveaway in cooperation with Rachelle. How cool will it be if you can wear an exclusive outfit during the holidays? Don’t miss it and keep on reading my blog to stay up-to-date.
