Have you ever eaten at the Bajes? And of course, I do not mean a real prison, but a crazy hotspot that shows a lot of street art. Last week I had a wonderful lunch with De Bajes on a sunny day. I’m so excited about the food, the interior and the atmosphere, because oh my … what an insane restaurant/bar! This bar has certainly caught my attention.
Nice to meet you Sven Toering
The Street Art Bar and Bikkesement De Bajes do not exist for so long, because on February the 16th, they opened the doors in Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam. Sven Toering starts the business with Matthijs Kanis from Flinders Café. The property of De Bajes was previously the Hummbar. In addition to this bar, Sven Toering has three other catering businesses.
The beautiful thing about De Bajes is that street art is painted on the walls by virtually good creativity, like The London Police, D * Face, Ben Eine and Laser 3.14. But there’s more, because besides the all-day food and drinks you can spend time at De Bajes at night by enjoying cocktails, specialty beers and bar bites. In addition, no radio music is played, but you can blow your mind, thanks to the best DJ’s in Amsterdam.
Go straight to the jail
Chef Niels van Halen runs the kitchen at De Bajes. Previously he served as chef of Michelin award-winning restaurant ‘De Hoefslag’ from 2002 till 2006. You absolutely don’t have to starve, because at the Bajes you can enjoy the Bajes Breakfast or an English breakfast. Lunch is also promising. From sandwiches with candied bacon and coarse sausage from Brandt & Levie to the Greenes sandwich ever, with additional smoothie shot. We ordered the Bajes club sandwich with grilled chicken. In the sandwich there are bacon, egg, tomato, cucumber that you can enjoy deliciously with potato chips and light curry cheese with fries. What did that say? Everything was perfect at that moment! Now I think about it, water is dripping out of my mouth and I’m craving for more. Get hold of me soon, because I want to go back to prison!
Lastly, the evening card. It consists of a selection of brasserie classics with a brutal twist: from Lomo Iberico, seaweed and stewed vongole with pumpkin puree and cooking to a superfood salad. In this prison, you absolutely don’t have to rely on water and bread.
The food is delicious, varied and for you and before you know, you’ll beg for more. Also for taking pictures for your social media, you do not want to be left behind 😉 So take a quick visit, because it’s worth it! During the week, De Bajes is open till 1:00 and weekends till 3:00 p.m.
What do you think of this concept?
